BY PETER QUINONES for LA ROCK REVIEW http://www.larockreview.com/index_files/Page1197.htm So what do the late Ronnie van Zandt of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Letterman show guitarist Hiram Bullock, and Amy Cooper all have in common? They all perform(ed) in bare feet - van Zandt used to say he liked to feel the stage burn. When Amy Cooper yanked off her shoes at the start of her third number at Piano's Saturday night, it was easy to see she felt the same way. The stage was definitely burning! When the band - Amy on guitar and vocals, Noah Wheeler on bass, and Alex DeCarville on drums locked into these tunes the result was a groove that provided both a great rock feel and tasty, danceable hooks. Whether the lyrics dwelled on an iffy relationship, as in Back Together: * It won't be long till I disappear Or the get happy, buoyant optimism of Come Alive: * You take me out of this world The songs were moving and real. Cooper's great, natural stage presence makes it impossible not to like her - the way she steps back from the microphone stand when not singing, dipping and bopping with head and shoulder moves, is very cool. A great time and an energetic show with a vibrant, dynamic performer. |
